The World of QR Codes

Quick Response, or QR codes, were first introduced to the world as the next generation to the barcode in 1994. Its invention stemmed from the lead developer Masahiro Hara of DENSO WAVE who realized the limited barcodes placed on their supermarket merchants. The square shape was adapted due to Hara and his team finding the square being a distinguishable shape. Due to its versatility, QR codes allow for more information to be presented either horizontally or vertically, being a 2-D (two-directional) code.

There are several types of QR codes available for creative designs. The first type of QR code is Micro QR codes; although this type holds less information they make up in size by being able to place it anywhere. Another type of QR code is iQR codes, which are rectangular with the ability to hold either more or less information than square or Micro QR codes. The last type is Frame QR codes which allow for a range of design possibilities from logo, color, shape, and type.

QR codes in 2021 are still very useful and can be found on various items from billboards to product packaging. The overall look of QR codes is also evolving to include the icon for the brand or campaign by the brand. Another reason QR codes will continue to be successful in 2021 is due to their ability to easily measure metrics and troubleshoots due to their simple design. QR code creation and implementation is also very easy and can be placed in various areas for engagement both online and offline/in-person.

Here are various ways QR codes can be used for marketing and business purposes:

Business cards

Print advertisements
